The field design of cartouches and vases differs from our example, which has four octagons with open outlines placed in the field. Damaged and heavily worn, one inserted section.

Heriz Lot: 114
Heriz Judging by its knotting structure and pile wool, this small carpet with a repeat of dark blue, angular arabesques was made in North West Persia, probably in the Heriz area. Palmettes and flowers have been lined up along the central axis of the red abrashed field, while further flowers are scattered across the field. The white-ground border contains a floral vine with blue leaves and red flowers drawn in the same austere style. Only a few early carpets from the Heriz area have survived. As this examples proves, they display designs and colours that have little in common with later commercial production. Newly overcast sides, several old repairs, slight signs of age and wear.

North West Persia, Azerbaijan

Afshar Bag Lot: 115
Afshar Bag Small Afshar bag in horizontal format with a garden design on a blue ground, surrounded by a border of diagonal stripes. The very fine weave has allowed the design to be executed in great detail. An outstanding example in terms of both colour and materials, probably of considerable age, whose good overall condition proves that it was appreciated by its previous owners. Slight damage to the upper edge, the red kilim back has been preserved.

Daghestan Prayer Rug Lot: 118
Daghestan Prayer Rug The splendid palette makes this beautiful prayer rug, probably woven in one of the villages of Daghestan in north eastern Transcaucasia, especially striking. The white field under the bridge-like mihrab is covered by a hexagonal lattice of deep blue lines enclosing multi-coloured, stylised, geometric cup palmettes. The intersection points of the lattice have been accentuated. The S designs of the border, crossed at an angle, have lately been interpreted as abstract representations of birds or dragons. Prayer rugs of similar design and composition were also woven in the areas of Kuba and Shirvan further to the south, but they diverge from Daghestan rugs in their slightly different style of drawing and palette. Low pile, reselvedged, somewhat reduced ends.
