Erzerum Kilim Lot: 151
Erzerum Kilim Distinctly larger in dimension than usual and with a sea green, hexagonal diamond medallion containing abstract flowers on a red ground, this Kurdish kilim from the East Anatolian region of Erzerum is a rarity; most surviving examples from the provenance are small-format prayer rugs. Highly stylised trees and vines surround the medallion while tree shapes adorn the wide, corn yellow border. Four thin pillars oriented towards the central motif show a distant influence of Ottoman court models. Various rewoven areas, now in good condition.

East Anatolia

Mushvani Baluch Lot: 152
Mushvani Baluch An archaically simple design of small angular botehs placed in offset rows has been executed in dark colours on a white ground. The extremely rare format of this long and narrow carpet raises the question of its purpose. Possibly an animal trapping, this decorative band was woven by the Mushvani tribe. We are not aware of any comparative examples. Slightly reduced ends, damaged sides, backed with a textile band all around.
Origin:
North East Persia, Khorasan
Size:
175 x 43 cm
Age:
Late 19th century
Estimate:
3.000,00 €

Baluch Prayer Rug Lot: 153
Baluch Prayer Rug A Baluch prayer rug displaying the „head-and-shoulders“ composition. The camel field shows three parallel trunks of a tree-of-life whose short horizontal branches are studded with star-shaped flowers drawn in red, brown and blue. Two large hands, an ancient protective symbol, appear in the corners next to the arch. This small prayer rug was probably made by a tribal group in the Torbat-e Jam region. The kilim finish is missing at the bottom, original sides, good condition, with the pile at its original height.

Kazak Lot: 160
Kazak A large, red-ground Kazak with a very rare design: two powerful stepped polygons flank a smaller central octagon containing a hooked diamond, with four octagons filled with stars arranged around it. As early as 1902, Mumford published a comparative example that only differs in colour distribution and border design. Here, the border is decorated with the bracket shapes often seen in Karachov Kazaks. The very good condition of the rug, preserved with the full pile, is explained by the fact that it was hung horizontally on a wall, as shown by the rings fixed to the reverse. In Caucasian villages, it was common to use carpets and flatweaves as wall hangings to protect from the cold. Original finishes all around, only minimal repairs.
