| Bakhtiari Khan Carpet | A very large, white-ground Bakhtiari in harmonious colours. An inscription at the top right of the border reads: “Farmayeshe Hasrad Ashraf Sardar Ashayer Il-Khani Qashqa’i”, which roughly translates as: “By order of his noble Excellency, General Ashayer Il, khan of the Qashqa’i tribes”. The carpet was probably woven as a commission for a tribal leader. Popular with the Bakhtiari, the bid majnun tree design of weeping willows, cypresses and large trees, their branches growing upwards in symmetrical V-shapes, is also known from North West Persian examples, but actually originates in East Persia. – Slight signs of age and wear, minor repairs, in good overall condition. | |

| Monastir Prayer Rug | This white-ground Monastir prayer rug is the only known dated example in the group. Distinctly different from other Turkish prayer rugs in design and style of drawing, Monastir weavings are easily distinguished. They were made in Macedonia by a Turkic group that was repatriated to Anatolia after 1920, during reorganisation of the former Ottoman Empire. Here, a tree-of-life decorated with red stars occupies the narrow field; the arch has the triangular shape of a Roman aedicula. – Good condition, original finishes all around. | |
