| Beauvais Tapestry | This tapestry of extremely fine weave, inscribed D.M. Beauvais in the lower surrounding band, was made in the Menue workshop of Beauvais, the capital of Picardie, a famous weaving centre since the days of Colbert. The theme of the tapestry – the soothsayer or palmist – is well known and has been frequently used. Here it has been executed to a design by the Italian artist Casanova. In the lower central section of the picture we see a young couple in Spanish dress; before them sits a gypsy woman reading the palm of the lady, who is obviously wealthy. The lady’s companion, half obscured by the other two figures, watches the proceedings with a sceptical air. At the lower left-hand edge, an infant stretched on the ground gazes at the observer, guarded by two hens and a sheep. Two further sheep are depicted at the lower left. A carriage and three unharnessed horses are seen in the background; the coachman looks out from behind the carriage, watching the scene. The wooded landscape of the background, partially obscured by a large extended cloth, indicates that the soothsayer lives in the wilderness. – The tapestry has been reduced below the upper border, probably to adapt its size to a certain ceiling height. Originally it was ca. 75 centimetres higher. However, the section no longer visible still exists; it has been stitched to the reverse. Except for the section bearing the inscription, the blue surronding band is a later addition. | |
