Yomut Tent Band Lot: 221
Yomut Tent Band A fully preserved, wide Yomut tent band that is less closely patterned than comparable jolamis dating from the same period. The designs have been drawn to a large scale and spaciously arranged. The main focus is on a compartment containing representations of five animals: two bridal camels drawn to different scales, with bridal litters on their backs, are standing one behind the other; above them we see two small camels and a horse carrying a tiny red rider. Here, the weaver has given us an impression of a wedding procession. – Good condition.

Baluch Lot: 222
Baluch The blue-black field displays a geometric, stylised version of the Persian mina khani repeat, here executed in three vertical rows of rectilinear twigs and serrated diagonal leaves. White star-shaped flowers provide lively highlights in the dark field. The wide, tomato red border contains a geometric, abstract vine of twigs decorated with blossoms and rosettes. The Baluch carpets of this group were probably made by the Karai tribe of the Torbat-e Haydari region. – Several old restored sections, in good overall condition. The kilim finishes are missing.

Beijing Palace Carpet Lot: 223
Beijing Palace Carpet Such Chinese carpets, made to order for the Imperial Court in Beijing workshops during the 19th century, constitute a group that is closely related in terms of materials (silk pile and metal brocading), format and ornamentation. Inscriptions woven into the upper finish frequently provide details of their exact destination within the huge palace complex. In this attractive example, with a repeat of light-ground compartments enclosing cross designs and a second design layer of crosses combining into a lattice, the entire brass-coloured ground of the field is brocaded in metal-wrapped yarn. – Signs of age and wear, original finishes all around.

Paotao Pictorial Rug Lot: 224
Paotao Pictorial Rug A red ground temple rug commissioned by a Tibetan monastery from one of the Paotao workshops, as indicated by the symbolism as well as the vertical Tibetan inscriptions. The directional design shows that the carpet used to be a wall hanging. A golden disc medallion with a spoked wheel forms the centre of the composition, surrounded by Buddhist-Lamaist emblems. Mount Meru, a holy mountain, rises from the roaring sea at the lower end of the field, while a Mahakara mask issuing strings of pearls is seen at the upper end. The mask is supposed to drive out evil spirits. – Well preserved, original finishes all around.

Khamseh, Baharlu Tribe Lot: 228
Khamseh, Baharlu Tribe Not only the Arabi tribes, but also the Turkic Baharlu and Ainalu wove carpets covered in dense repeats of birds. Their main differences are a finer weave, the palette and a divergent style of drawing. Judging by its light colours and finely spun pile wool, this carpet was probably made by the Baharlu. The light-blue field, abrashed in several tones, shows a tree design consisting of four rows, their thin red trunks decorated with red rosettes and flowering branches. They are interspersed with chickens and four-legged animals arranged in pairs. – Original sides, both ends somewhat reduced, signs of wear in the pile. In good overall condition.

Baku Kelleh Lot: 230
Baku Kelleh In style of drawing, this rare Baku workshop carpet woven in the kelleh format resembles sumakh flatweaves. Four rows of large, geometric stylised palmettes interspersed with talish rosettes have been arranged into a strictly symmetrical repeat on the cobalt blue ground. The rich palette, including very beautiful shades of aubergine and green, and the free development of the design are indications of great age. A comparable carpet showing a palmette repeat on a red ground is in the collections of Colonial Williamsburg, Virgina. – Uniformly low pile, various well executed repiled and repaired areas.
