Milas Heybe Lot: 71
Milas Heybe Complete Milas double bags are great rarities and coveted collectors items. The design of this beautiful example woven in first-rate colours is entirely characterised by elibelinde motifs. The connecting panels of such double bags, called „heybe“ in Anatolia, are notably larger that those of Persian khorjins, with a long, vertical slit down the centre. In this item, the two halves of the connecting panel have been executed in pile technique, whereas they are flatwoven in most other heybes. The original leather trim has survived at both ends. Good condition.

South West Anatolia

126 x 47 cm

Mid 19th century

Shahsavan Bag Lot: 72
Shahsavan Bag Half of a Shahsavan khorjin in sumakh technique from the Khamseh region in Persian Azerbaijan. The field design consists of wide, white-ground horizontal stripes with abstract syrga birds and thinner, dark blue horizontal stripes containing halved stepped polygons. The white-ground main border is decorated with syrga motifs; the two guard stripes, a green-ground inner and a blue-ground outer stripe, contain the small rosettes that are characteristic of weavings by the Khamseh Shahsavan. Slight signs of wear, a monochrome red kilim back. The remains of the closure bands have been folded over and stitched to the reverse, the seams along the sides have been undone.

Luri Kilim Lot: 75
Luri Kilim A large kilim of abstract design by the Luri of Fars, with six horizontal panels in red, blue, orange, green and brown containing zip fastener designs in contrasting colours. The panels are separated by narrow black-and-white bands of reciprocal hooks. The expressive colour scheme and use of brown warps indicates a provenance among the Luri who probably adopted this memorable design from the neighbouring Qashqai. Minor rewoven areas, now in good condition.

Art Deco Carpet Lot: 77
Art Deco Carpet An impressive Art Deco carpet, its abstract pattern of blocks of colour based on a design by Russian-French artist Sonia Delauney (1885 - 1979), an all-round talent who not only gained fame as a painter, but also created carpet and textile designs. Her initials, „S D“, are inscribed into a compartment at the lower end of the carpet. Reminiscent of Mondrian paintings not only in its strict geometry and degree of abstraction, but also in palette, this composition shows the great influence exerted by „De Stijl“, a Dutch artist group, at the time. The pile is low in two of the dark brown fields due to corrosion, otherwise in good condition, with the original finishes all around.
Origin:
France
Size:
232 x 161 cm
Age:
Ca. 1935
Estimate:

Chelaberd Lot: 78
Chelaberd This Chelaberd from the private collection of deceased New York gallery owner Vojtech Blau represents the early design type of the group, with only one sunburst medallion and two large, halved flowers framed by a semi-circular arch decorated with vines at the ends of the field. Derived from the design repertoire of older, 18th century Caucasian workshop carpets, the designs migrated to a rural environment, where a new compositional context was invented for them. Small flowers, palmettes and animals complete the primary design. Schürmann illustrated a very similar example. Corroded and repiled brown sections, newly overcast sides. Original end finishes, but restored in places, one stitched tear.
