Baluch Lot: 86
Baluch An extremely rare Baluch exhibited in Munich in 1978. The camel ground displays a lattice design whose compartments contain small octagons arranged into blocks of four, 66 of them each enclosing a pinwheel design. Hubert Prieger’s research into Islamic number symbolism, conducted for years, has regrettably not been published to date. Its application to this Baluch would result in the following interpretation: the number 139 is repeated six times in the interstices between the hooked diamonds of the border. This number is not a date, but a secret code for the Islamic invocation "Yoh Husain", only comprehensible to the initiated. Husain was a martyr, murdered in Karbala upon the order of Yazid, caliph of Baghdad, in the year 61 of the Islamic calendar, together with his 72 companions. He is still mourned by Shiites today. The 72 octagons in the field represent his dead followers. The octagons contain 66 pinwheel motifs, corresponding to the number for invoking Allah. – Good condition.

Baluch Prayer Rug Lot: 87
Baluch Prayer Rug This pretty prayer rug woven in the Torbat-e Haydari region stands out on account of the large scale of its tree-of-life. In this regard as well as in border design it corresponds to a Baluch in the Boucher Collection. The two red hands seen next to the shoulders of the square arch are a protective symbol (hand of Fatima), and thus do not indicate the places where the hands should be placed during prayer, as is sometimes suggested. – Good condition, with the original finishes all around.
