Art Deco Carpet A rare Art Deco carpet knotted in Morocco ca. 1930 to a design by French artist Jules-Henri Derche, who lived in Casablanca and worked as an Orientalist painter, gallery manager and designer. Influenced by the abstract designs of North African Berber carpets like other designers of his day (e.g. Ivan da Silva Bruhns), Derche developed a characteristic style in his designs, using typical Art Deco elements. In this piece, these are two wide, blue panels extending across the field in parallel, but not symmetrical, lines like slightly bent railway tracks, imbuing the composition with a rhythm all its own. The artist’s initials are inscribed in the top left corner. – A smaller Derche carpet (201 x 100 cm) of similar design (only one blue bar), owned by John Jesse (previously Karl Lagerfeld, sold by Sotheby's, Monaco, in 1995) was sold by Sotheby's, London, in 2006. – A heavy carpet with a high pile, very well preserved.

Akstafa Prayer Rug Judging by its long, narrow format, this early prayer rug from the Shirvan region belongs to the Akstafa group. An unusual feature is the division of the field into a blue and a red section. The tree design ascending towards the arch on the dark blue ground ends abruptly below the mihrab; in the upper red section, the white, bridge-shaped arch is embedded in a pattern of octagonal flowers. Both the quality of the colours and the style of the drawing are indications of the rug’s great age, which is especially apparent in the “eagle’s beak” border, a vine decorated with abstract birds. – The outermost border is missing all around, low pile, several holes, minor repairs.

East Caucasus, Shirvan

Ersari Main Carpet A rare Ersari carpet presenting a compartment design in two rows; each compartment contains a dyrnak gül set inside a stepped polygon. The framing bands are decorated with small trees. The best known example of this small group is the carpet in the Meyer-Müller Collection, also woven in a long narrow format. Far too long for use in a tent, such carpets were probably made by the Ersari for houses in oasis towns, and were possibly commissioned. – Various restored areas, several creases, signs of wear in the pile, partially renewed selvedges.
