Ningxia Cushion Panel Lot: 192
Ningxia Cushion Panel This square seat cover used to belong to one of the large bench covers on which monks were seated in Buddhist monasteries during religious ceremonies. Five dragons are depicted in lively movement on the light brown field. An unusual stylistic feature is the sickle shape of the four dragons circling the central disc medallion. Slighly reduced ends, otherwise very well preserved, with the pile at full height.

Bijar Kilim Lot: 193
Bijar Kilim The field of this unique Bijar kilim is covered in a tile design of generously proportioned diamonds whose colour variations do not follow a specific pattern. Powerful crosses have been placed in the diamonds. Many design outlines have been woven in weft interlocking technique to avoid slits, and make this heavy weaving more resilient. A simple reciprocal trefoil border frames the field to good effect. Estimating the age of this kilim is difficult on account of the absence of comparative pieces. However, its monumental drawing and the quality of its colours are indications of an early date. Original finishes all around, minor repiled areas, in good overall condition.

Genje Prayer Rug Lot: 196
Genje Prayer Rug Judging by its comparatively coarse weave and specific palette, this prayer rug with a design of white-and-blue diagonal stripes, a red main border and a yellow outer border adorned with small crosses was probably woven in the Genje area, then the province of Elisabethpol. When knotting the prayer arch, the weaver had some trouble integrating the pointed top of the mihrab into the basic design an irregularity that imbues the rug with its own special flair. Original finishes all around, uniformly low pile. A stitched crease in the lower section of the field.

Karabagh Lot: 197
Karabagh The red field is inscribed with a large, dark blue central medallion surrounded by four pointed cartouches at the upper and lower end of the field, motifs that are reminiscent of Fachralo Kazaks. However, the characteristic border area makes the Karabagh region the likely provenance. The long narrow format is unusual. A comparatively fine weave with red wefts; the carpet structure is similar to that of Chelaberds. Original selvedges, several repairs, somewhat reduced ends.

Karachov Kazak Lot: 201
Karachov Kazak This very large Karachov of monumental appearance, with a deep green field, a yellow border and red-and-white guard stripes, is considered one of the oldest and most remarkable examples of its kind. We sold it once before, in the autumn of 1994, when it achieved a record-breaking price (see HALI APG, HALI 78, London 1994, p. 128). The stunning impact of its design as well as the special quality of its colours, with a light aubergine (almost lilac) hue, a golden yellow, a sea green and a powerful tomato red, suggest an early date. Original finishes all around, high pile, several old repairs.

Bokhara Suzani Lot: 202
Bokhara Suzani This antique Bokhara silk embroidery is captivating due to its finely balanced palette and elegant field design  a diamond lattice composed of budding green twigs and short twigs crowned by red, halved blossoms. In the border, various types of flower are connected by elongated lancet leaves and parallel panicles, creating a sweeping vine design. The delicate style of the drawing and the degree of abstraction seen in the floral ornaments reveal an influence of Indian design principles.  Backed with fabric, only minimal signs of age, good condition.

Khotan Saf Lot: 203
Khotan Saf A rare Khotan rug with six niches, five of them enclosing tree-of-life motifs and one decorated with rectangular compartments containing dots. The golden yellow border patterned with small red diamonds not only frames the sides but also separates the niches. The question of whether such Khotan carpets, called „saf“ or „multiple prayer rugs“, were actually used for prayer or rather served as decorative wall hangings is a controversial issue. An unusual feature in this example is the even number of niches, whereas most comparable pieces have three, five, seven, nine etc. niches. Small holes, slight damage along the sides, in good overall condition for an example of this age.
