Ersari Ensi Lot: 225
Ersari Ensi This large Ersari door hanging made in one of the villages in the Amu Darya river valley is almost identical with an example sold by us in 2003. Judging by its dimensions, the piece was designed for use in a house as it is far too large for a tent door hanging. Woven from lustrous, silky wool in strikingly brilliant colours and with a design of balanced proportions, it is one of the most beautiful surviving examples of its group. The tile repeat of the field, here with four complete hexagons and eight hexagons overlaid by the border, is drawn in ikat style. The border design of large diagonal crosses is rarely seen in this type. Original finishes all around, very good condition.

Silk Tabriz Lot: 226
Silk Tabriz A first-rate silk carpet with a highly unusual niche design. The beige-ground niche shows a slim tree with hanging flowering branches growing from a vase, flanked by two diagonal botehs at the bottom. The red areas on both sides of the niche are filled with intersecting vines bearing flowers. In the yellow main border, the fine lines studding the blue vine like small thorns are a striking feature. A wide edge of diagonal botehs provides the outer finish. The design appears to be influenced by East Persian models. In view of the knotting structure, silk material and palette, and the fact that the carpet was knotted against the direction of the design, the only feasible provenance is Tabriz. A comparative pieces was exhibited at the Philadelphia ICOC. Very good condition.
