Qalamkar Lot: 267
Qalamkar This very finely woven cotton textile, ornately printed with floral and architectural designs, served as a prayer mat. An elegantly sweeping mihrab has been placed at the top end of the field, with a dense pattern of flowering branches above while roses adorn the open space below. The border shows small cypresses set into niches. The textile was probably woven in the workshops of Esfahan, but it is equally possible that it was made in North India for the Persian market. Portuguese Silk Embroidery Lot: 269
Portuguese Silk Embroidery This pretty silk embroidery on a quilted ground was probably made in the Portuguese colony of Macau, a port town on the South China Sea. It was used as a decorative bedspread. The carpet-like design a division of the space into a field and border, with a central medallion and corner solutions shows Chinese design influences, which are especially evident in the peacocks placed into the four corners, depicted in flight like cranes or phoenixes in older Chinese models. Very good condition.
