Information for Consignors

If you would like to submit rugs, carpets or textiles for inclusion in our auction sales, please send us photographs of the objects in advance, either by letter or by e-mail. In addition please provide details of the objects’ dimensions, provenance and condition. Any expert opinions available may be submitted for our information, but will usually be irrelevant for our assessment of auction lots. We will first check whether objects fit into the scope of our auctions of old and antique collector’s items and then proceed to make an initial selection.

The second step is valuation of the objects, a process in which we set reserves and estimates in agreement with our consignors. We are only able to provide reserves and estimates after we have inspected the objects ourselves. The prices we propose are guided by recent results achieved for comparable objects at international auctions. All valuations will be conducted on our premises. There is no charge for valuation and assessment of objects at our Wiesbaden office if those objects are consigned for auction.

Valuation of major collections:

If a home visit has been arranged at the owner’s request for valuation of a major collection, either in Germany or abroad, we will charge a valuation fee of 1,500 Euro (plus VAT) per working day plus travel costs. We will waive our valuation fee and travel costs in cases where the objects valued are consigned for auction within the following six months.

Reserves and estimates:

Reserves and estimates will be set by our experts to the best of their knowledge and belief and will be agreed with the consignor. The reserves agreed between the consignor and Rippon Boswell & Co. will be treated confidentially and will not be disclosed to third parties prior to the auction. The prices published in our catalogues will be the estimates only.

Costs:

The consignor shall pay a commission of 20 % of the hammer price for every object sold successfully. An additional cost of 0.4 % is payable for insurance. There is a handling charge of 75 Euros for every unsold lot. We will charge 230 Euros for a full-page colour illustration and 150 Euros for a part-page illustration in our printed auction catalogue. Illustration in our online catalogue, which is published in parallel with our printed catalogue, is a requirement and will be charged at 40 Euros. If an object is illustrated in the printed catalogue, there will be no additional charge for illustration in the online catalogue. VAT at the statutory German rate of 19 % is payable on the commission and on all charges. Catalogue costs and insurance fees shall be payable by the consignor even if the object remains unsold.

Insurance:

Items consigned shall be insured against the usual risks at the agreed estimate once they have been received by Rippon Boswell. A flat fee of 0.4 % of the estimate will be charged for insurance. The insurance will terminate as soon as the contract expires.

Shipping costs:

The costs of shipping objects to Wiesbaden and, if applicable, for return shipment shall be payable by the consignor. Shipping will be undertaken either by parcel post, forwarding agent or courier service. Consignors from non-EU countries shall be liable for any import duties and customs charges arising from importation into Germany.

After Sales:

All objects which failed to reach their reserves during the auction may be sold in the after sale period. This auction after sale will end eight weeks after the auction date. For the after sale, the reserves agreed by contract shall be binding unless they are reduced by the consignor. During the after sale, Rippon Boswell will continue to store and insure the objects. Our obligation to provide insurance will terminate upon expiry of after sale period.

Settlement:

Invoicing and payment generally take place six weeks after the date of the auction. In case a buyer fails to pay by this deadline, payment to the consignor will take place immediately once we have received the sum payable. Payment is usually made by bank transfer. For cash payments in excess of 15.000 Euros, we are legally obliged to establish the recipient’s identity and to take a copy of his / her identification document.

Auctioneer’s status:

Rippon Boswell & Co. GmbH sells by public auction in the name and for account of their consignors. We do not sell objects owned by ourselves as a matter of principle. The fall of the hammer at our auctions shall be deemed to conclude a contract of sale between the consignor and the buyer. The VAT Margin Scheme shall not apply.
