A dark blue rectangle containing human and animal figures has been placed at the centre of a yellow field densely covered in small botehs. Four tiny human figures have been included in the field design at the sides, two horsemen are integrated into the star border. Dated 1247 (= 1832 AD), this carpet, probably made in Daghestan, represents a period of Caucasian pile-weaving of which little is known as only a small number of examples survive, thus it constitutes an important reference piece. – Heavy damage due to age, reduced ends, darned areas.

An antique Gabbeh by the Qashqa´i nomads, with two boldly stepped diamonds, each enclosing a smaller diamond, merging into one another. The spaces between are undecorated, a simple border of interlocked triangles has been added. This coarsely woven carpet of rustic appearance, with a poster-like design, is captivating for its brilliant colours: a triad of red, steel blue and canary yellow. Antique Gabbehs such as this are now popular with collectors as authentic folk art. – Very well preserved for its age, sides newly overcast.

Konya Kilim Fragment

Originally a two-panel kilim, the surviving piece is the larger section of one panel. This impressive flatweave used to be in the Kirchheim Collection, and has been published in ""Orient Stars"". As Rageth emphasises in his description, the usual separation of the field and border has been reversed here: a field design of rectangles has been placed on the uniformly blue ground in such a way that the free spaces around them are seen as frames. The dominant motif, a gül-like ornament composed of three hexagons with an extensive outline of hooks and poles, is interpreted by Rageth as a “goddess with leopards”, in the spirit of the ""Neolithic school"". – Mounted onto canvas.

Qashqa´i Kilim

A large Qashqa´ kilim with a light red field and two ochre diamond medallions, with a cruciform interior drawing and a wide, blue stepped outline. – Good condition.

Konya Long Rug

A long village rug from the Konya region, a typical representative of the “yellow ground Konya group” judging by its field colour and simple design. The golden yellow field shows four massive Memling güls and three amulets at each end, the dark brown border contains geometrically stylised endless knots. – Original finishes all around, repiled sections in the field, the corroded dark brown sections have been restored.

Turkmen ""Lotto"" Carpet

This rare piece, the work of a Turkmen weaver judging by its structure, palette and technical details, is mystifying on account of its extraneous design. Faithful to detail, it emulates the field and border composition of a much older ""Lotto"" carpet from western Anatolia, although this has been combined with the pile-woven striped elems of the Turkmen. It is possible that the weaver modelled it on a photograph of a Lotto carpet illustrated in an early publication. However, it is also conceivable that she knew the original. – Various holes, damage to the sides and corners, well-preserved pile in the undamaged areas. Backed with canvas.

Sivas

Large hook forms in yellow, blue-green and dusky pink have been placed along the central axis of the red field and interspersed with many smaller filler motifs, including animals. Made in the Sivas region, this piece is remarkable for being a pile carpet with a kilim design, as if the weaver had used a flatweave as a model, as the border in particular seems to suggest. – Signs of heavy wear and damage due to age, sewn onto a backing fabric.

A small-format Chodor main carpet presenting a rare field design of hooked diamonds, with quartered interiors, arranged in diagonal rows by colour change on the light red field.
Distinctly larger than usual, unlike earlier prayer rugs, this Fachralo Kazak was probably not used in prayer, but had a purely decorative function. – Completely preserved, with remains of the kilim finishes and multi-coloured original selvedges. The corroded dark brown sections have been partially repiled, the pile is somewhat low in places.

This yellow-ground silk embroidery in iraki (cross stitch) technique was made in Shakhrisyabz or its immediate surroundings. It was once used as a tablecloth. As the women of the Lakai tribes had attained a particular feeling for expressive colour combinations, this seems a reasonable attribution for this Suzani. Large formats such as the piece offered here had to be made in sections and joined together due to the small dimensions of the embroidery frames on which they were worked. According to research by Tschepelewezkaja, such tablecloths were produced for the beys of Shakhrisyabz. – Signs of age and wear, several dark stains, seams damaged in places, minor areas of discolouration.

The constant colour change within the individual rows of knots give the ground a flickering, restless appearance of a kind only seen in southern Persian Gabbehs.
The diamonds filled with a cross in the royal blue field are a design element usually employed by the Kurds. The white main border containing Saliani rosettes is accompanied by two trefoil borders in the style of Kazak carpets. This heterogeneous ornamentation makes it impossible to attribute the carpet to a particular provenance. Its structure (a wool warp, white cotton wefts, white selvedges) suggests that this rare piece was probably woven in Azerbaijan. – Large areas of expert repiling in the corner areas on the left, now in good condition.

A village kilim from the southern Caucasus showing red, brown, green, mid blue and blue-black serrated diamonds outlined in white, with smaller forms displaying a high proportion of yellow nested inside them. The serrated outlines imbue the design with a dynamic expression, while the mellow, patinated colours create a harmonious mood. There is disagreement in the specialist world as to which ethnic group has woven such kilims. All groups inhabiting the region can be considered, i.e. Armenians, Azeri Turks, Kurds and Shahsavan nomads. The wide, flat-woven finish at one end, with plaited warp ends, resembles the finishes seen on Kazak and Karabagh carpets that are often Armenian weavings. – Only slight signs of wear, good overall condition.

The carpets of the Beshir Turkmen differ greatly from the repertoire of other Turkmen tribes. Their designs and compositions, often influenced by Persian models, show no relationship with typical Turkmen gül ornamentation, and are surprising in their diversity. No other Turkmen tribe has woven designs as heterogeneous as these. To date, there has been little research into Beshir carpets, and a monograph on this interesting tribe is still outstanding. This attractive example, woven in light colours, has a field design of horizontal rows in which bottle-like botehs alternate with large palmettes. – Restored sides and ends, various repiled areas.

Kazaks with large botehs in a composition of wide diagonal stripes are rather rare. This design is more often seen in the Genje region. However, the knotting structure, palette and typically high pile are clear indicators of a provenance in the Kazak region. – Both end finishes have been expertly repiled. The inscription at the top of the field states that the carpet was “woven by Miriam"" in the year ""1314"" (1897). – Minimally reduced ends, the sides have the original two-tone overcasting.
Along the central axis of the white field, three huge, dark blue diamond medallions are embedded in a generously proportioned lattice of serrated green leaves and multi-coloured palmettes, executed in wonderful, brilliant colours. This field design obviously goes back to Indian models (see fragment of a velvet fabric in Herrmann and a velvet in the Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon). The characteristic border shows that the carpet belongs to a specific group from Persian Azerbaijan, always very long. It is probably the oldest piece in the group. – Strong signs of age and wear, repairs, low pile. Sides newly overcast, both ends repiled.

Seeing that sleeping rugs (yatak) were made for home use and subject to a great deal of wear in everyday life, the good condition of this splendidly coloured example from a village in the Kütahya region is remarkable. Red, white, azure, light green and aubergine rectangles have been arranged in a design of rows on the golden yellow field, interspersed with small, white, stepped polygons. Another example of this rare group is a fragment in the Prammer Collection, exhibited in the Municipal Museum of Graz in 2001. – Full pile preserved, original sides, both end finishes somewhat damaged.

In Iran, the term ""ru khorsi"" (literally: blanket over the table) is used for covers stretched across a coal brazier around which the family gathered on cold days. As ru khorsi quickly wore out with use and were rarely exported, being textiles produced for home use, they are now rare and coveted collector´s items. – Small stains, one darned area, otherwise in very good condition.

From the mid 19th century, Bakhtiari tribal leaders, called ""khans"", commissioned carpets with large inscriptions immortalising the name of the client and all his honorifics. In a pioneering article published in HALI, Ian Bennett examined this interesting phenomenon, drawing on rich sources and photo archives. The example offered here, made in the area around Shalamzar judging by its structure, bears the inscription, ""Farmayesh Aqa-e Morteza Quli Khan Bakhtiari, 1314"". Born in 1877, Morteza Quli Khan was 19 years old when he received this carpet. Another carpet made for him, of comparable design and similar colours but much larger dimensions, dated 1331 is illustrated in Bennett´s feature. – Very good condition.

Only a few Tekke ensis with this unusual tree border, where the branches appear like birds´ wings, are known. Except for the difference in elem ornamentation, an example in the Hoffmeister Collection, exhibited in Washington in 2004, is directly comparable. Our piece, submitted from a southern German private collection, is striking for its irregular structure and fluctuating knot density. Cotton was used for the white design sections in the upper part, where the pile is so high that the design appears blurred. - Original upper finish (a red kilim folded back), remnants of a white kilim survive at the bottom. Cut sides, replaced cords. Various restored areas.

The saffron field of this large-format Khotan has a mirror-image design of two pomegranate trees, more spaciously drawn than usual and bearing blue rather than red fruit. A change in design can be observed in the wide, three-panel border. Although carpets of similar composition and ornamentation were made in the workshops of the oasis, the soft, loose and irregular knotting structure indicates that our example was made in Khotan. – Somewhat reduced at the top, the original cotton kilim survives at the bottom.
The blue-black field of this Kurdish village rug is covered with two rows of hooked hexagons outlined in white. The spaces between the designs are decorated with hooked diamonds and horizontal chains of `X´ forms. The primary motif was employed by the Jaff and Sanjabi Kurds in Central Kurdistan as well as East Anatolian tribes (see example in Willborg).
Such carpets, called ""Torok"" in Iran, were woven by an Afshar tribal group living in Khorasan, a fact that is little known in the west and usually not mentioned in literature. While the differences to Afshar weavings from the Kerman region are less apparent in the design and palette, Torok carpets can be clearly distinguished by their knotting structure, which differs from that of the southern Afshar tribes. The elems at both ends are woven in sumakh technique. A rare collector´s piece. – Good condition.

Judging by the type of stitches, style and palette, this fabulously beautiful Suzani silk embroidery on a five-panel ground is unmistakably from Shakhrisyabz, the Green City in the Emirate of Bokhara where many of the best Suzanis were produced. On account of its rich and complex design, the quality of its embroidery and magnificent colours, it is datable to the 18th century. The extra-wide border displays the characteristic formal repertoire, although here it appears more opulent and lively than in other outstanding pieces and includes four stars in the large circular blossoms. The secondary borders show varying vines. – The aubergine sections of the design are heavily corroded. Several darned areas and stains. Not backed with fabric.

This large fragment of a Central Persian carpet, possibly made in the Imperial workshops of Kashan or Qazvin, was first published in a catalogue by Lefevre, London, in 1979 (where it was called ""Herat""). The fragment consists of many individual pieces joined together so skilfully that at first glance, they appear as a complete carpet. This Central Persian carpet may originally have measured around 3 x 5 metres, like the closely related Sangiorgi carpet (illustrated in Pope, pl. 1179). Very finely woven on a yellow silk warp, with magnificent colours and a perfectly drawn repeat of palmettes and cloudbands, this carpet is one of the best surviving examples from the mid 16th century. Its main border of a deep green ground colour shows elongated cartouches interspersed with near circular medallions, a composition that occurs in the earlier Ardabil carpet (dated 1539). – Corroded brown sections, several old repairs, pile mostly in good condition.

A large workshop carpet with a double niche design enclosing a central diamond on a green field, surrounded by six light red cypress trees. A wide three-panel border of floral and geometric designs. The piece was probably made on commission in Rabat. Such carpets were used in Moroccan town houses, but also often exported to Europe, especially France and Spain. Their designs deviate from those of other Oriental carpets, using ornaments from the Ottoman tradition, but placing these in a different context. – Signs of age and wear, several restorations, newly overcast sides.

The main differences between kilims woven by the Luri tribes inhabiting the Fars region and Quashqa´i pieces, which are very similar in design, is the somewhat coarser weave of the former and their often brown or light brown warps, but it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the flatweaves of the two tribes. The structure suggests that this kilim was made by the Luri. Two interlocked, colourful diamonds have been placed along the central axis of the field, with smaller, white diamonds scattered around them. Colourful stepped diagonal stripes fill the corners. – Well preserved, except for slight signs of wear.

Previously unpublished, this Salor torba, probably made between 1800 and 1830, is one of the small-format kejebe weavings without a darvaza gül. Indications for its age are the distinct patina, the high proportion of raspberry silk sections and the perfection of the drawing. The exact use of small-format kejebe weavings (wedding trappings or bag faces?) is uncertain. – Sides newly overcast, top and bottom finishes slightly reduced.

In the Persian view, the design of this Farahan, a powerful sunburst medallion on an cream field that is undecorated except for two cut medallions and red shrubs extending into it at the top, bottom and sides, symbolises the eternal cycle of nature. The central design is the life-giving sun, shown at its zenith, the cut ornaments show sunrise and sunset, and the plants will only flower because of the sun´s rays. This carpet, of supreme quality and in excellent condition, with the full pile preserved, was exhibited at the Hamburg Museum für Kunsthandwerk in 1971.

Pile-woven in a format untypical of export pieces, indicating a Persian client, this white-ground Farahan belongs to the garden type. A longing for flowering gardens, viewed as images of paradise on earth, is deeply rooted in all Oriental peoples. A mighty tree, its branches laden with flowers, fills the field. The steep, arched niche above is supported by two blue pillars. The two blue corners above the niche are densely covered in vivid arabesques. – Several old restorations, slightly reduced at the top, low spots in the pile.

The carpets of the Khorasan Kurds are easily distinguished from other Kurdish pieces by their colouring of earthy tones. This example, of powerful appearance, was probably made in the Darreh Gaz region.
This large kilim, first published by Frauenknecht and later in ""Yayla"", is captivating for the stunning impact of its design, with four light red hexagons drawn with hooks merging into one another along the central axis of the field, and its rare azure ground colour. The central panel is woven in one piece, avoiding misalignment of the ornaments along the vertical axis as is so frequently encountered in kilims; the borders were woven separately. Neither Frauenknecht nor Brüggemann were able to attribute this kilim to a particular place or tribe, but they agreed on a provenance in the western part of Central Anatolia. – Several holes, backed with canvas.

Friedrich Spuhler established the name “Yellow Group” for this type of village rugs from the Konya region; little known in the past, they are woven in strong colours and archaic designs (often with Memling güls in the field, combined with a variety of border ornaments). Many examples can be found in ""Orient Stars"", the book on the Kirchheim Collection. The example offered here, with a balanced yet powerful design and first-rate colours, dates from the 18th century. The comparative piece cited below belongs to the same group although it differs in field design. – Completely preserved, thoroughly corroded brown, an ink stain at the upper kilim finish.

In the 19th century, large carpets in kelleh format (width to length roughly 1 to 2.5 or 3) such as this example were a speciality of the workshops of Shusha, a major city in the Karabagh region. They were often commissioned by Russian officers or officials and, according to surviving sources, also exported to the Tsarist Empire. Their ornamentation is greatly influenced by Persian knotting. The minah khani design, here woven in the brilliant bright colours that are typical of the provenance, and the spacious floral vine of the main border derive from Khorasan models, as does the large, cochineal red central medallion, but all have been adapted to the Caucasian style. – Very good condition, only a few small repairs.

In view of the Transcaucasian village population´s insistence on adhering to traditional designs, it is not surprising that ""Pinwheel"" Kazaks displaying this striking design of dark blue boxes decorated with spirals, diagonal green dragons and white rosettes were woven until well into the 20th century. Production of this type, now especially popular and in demand, even resumed in Anatolia some thirty years ago. – The sheer size of this carpet group only became apparent when border restrictions were removed. A comparison of published examples reveals aesthetic and material differences – in division of space, design balance, palette, knotting structure and type of wool used – whereby dating is possible. Previously unpublished, the piece offered here, from a German collection, was acquired from the Berlin art trade around 1900. The quality of the colours and classical composition support an early date (probably the first half of the 19th century). Perhaps not quite as old as the Pinwheel Kazaks in the McMullan and Kirchheim Collections, this Kazak is on a par with the piece in the Berlin Museum and an example exhibited by Herrmann in 1991. – Original selvedges and upper finish, somewhat reduced at the bottom. Slight signs of wear in the pile.

A large Kashmir shawl from France with a complicated, exactly symmetrical design of huge vines and lively botehs arranged around a black-ground ogival central motif. Very finely woven in lance technique. The signature ""FM"" woven in all four corners identifies this magnificent shawl as a product of the Paris Fortier and Maillard weaving mill, established in 1852. Judging by the style of the Harlekin seams, the shawl was made around 1860. – Good condition.

This early Nim Suzani, produced without secondary borders, is from Kermina. The field has small blossoms composed of four circles embedded in a delicate lattice. This particular type of blossom also belonged to the formal repertoire of Bokhara Suzanis, but the colour combination seen here, with blue and grey-brown segments, only occurs in Kermina. – Backed with fabric and mounted onto a wooden frame. The original decorative silk fringe has survived. Damage to the corner at the top right, where the ground weave is torn in several places.

Konya Prayer Rug

This prayer rug belongs to a well-known Central Anatolian type whose two-storey architectural design, with a colonnade-like arrangement of columns at the bottom, a wide transitional zone and a gallery placed on top, combined with a characteristic golden-yellow main border, is closely associated with West Anatolian prayer rugs of the Transylvanian type (see e.g. HALI 55, 1991, p. 123, no. 12: carpet at Skokloster). The same group includes inv. no. E-17 in the Istanbul Vakiflar Museum (ill. in HALI II, 3, 1979, no. 10, p. 222), an example in the Bernheimer Collection and a carpet sold by us in 1995. A prayer rug in the Kinebanian Collection, Amsterdam (ill. in HALI 36, 1987, p. 104) is identical except for the blue main border. Also closely related is no. 907 in the Türk ve Islam Eserleri Museum, Istanbul, despite the differences in the field design. A possible precursor for the group of examples cited earlier is a carpet in the Alexander Collection. The large number of surviving examples of later date (e.g. Bausback, 1981) proves that this type was woven in almost unchanged form until the 19th century. – Replaced selvedges, minimally reduced ends. The corroded dark brown sections have been restored in places. Various repiled areas.

Fragment of a village rug with a niche design in splendid colours from the Konya region, formerly in the ""Orient Stars"" collection. The surviving piece constitutes the top right-hand corner. Several blue hooks at the bottom left are remnants of the central medallion. It is possible that the original composition was in mirror image, as is often seen in this type, in which case this would have been a double niche carpet. Indicators of the date are the style of the drawing and the good quality of the colours. – Mounted onto red fabric.

Moghan Long Rug

An extremely rare carpet in a long format, its field abrashed in several shades of brown and covered by a network of light blue lines running diagonally to the central axis, probably symbolising a tree-of-life. Various animals, diamonds, squares, rosettes and even combs are distributed across the ground; the pattern increases in density as it ascends. Herrmann, who published one of the few comparative pieces, interprets this design as a “stairway to heaven”. The great age of this carpet, which may be the work of the Moghan Shahsavan, is apparent not only in the quality of materials and clear colours, but also in the archaic style of the wide border. – Very well preserved, original finishes all around.

This Sehna, very finely woven on a purple silk warp, stands out for its unusual design of almost unknown ornaments in the field and borders of roughly equal width. It was obviously made for a special occasion as two human figures, perhaps a bridal couple, are depicted in the tips of the medallion. – Cut sides, the cords have been replaced. The outer border is missing at both ends. One repiled area in the field. Otherwise in good condition.

A very finely woven Shahsavan cover composed of six panels. The traditional design consists of narrow vertical stripes in white, brick red, sandy yellow, midnight blue and Prussian blue, alternately left plain or decorated with tiny flowering shrubs. Judging by the mellow, harmonious colours, this jijim was probably made in the surroundings of Mianeh. – Several small darned areas, in good overall condition.

Very finely woven and firmly depressed, this sumakh bag face by the Moghan Shahsavan, once part of a khorjin, shows one of the archetypal designs of the tribe, the so-called turtle gül symbolising an ancient cosmology. As early as 1969, a bag face of this type was pictured on the jacket of “From the Bosporus to Samarkand”, the influential exhibition catalogue on flatweaves. A comparison of surviving bags displaying the turtle design reveals only minor differences: like antique Salor weavings, their compositional features were so set as regards form and colour that major deviations did not even occur to the weavers. – Original sides, the striped kilim back has survived, backed with linen. Only slight signs of age. Woven from light green silk, the octagon at the gül centre is heavily corroded.

This Chelaberd, formerly in the private collection of Vojtech Blau, New York, is a representative example of the early type of this group, with just one sunburst medallion and two large, halved flowers surrounded by a semi-circular arch decorated with vines at the edges of the field. These ornaments derive from the design repertoire of older Caucasian workshop carpets made in the 18th century. Small flowers, palmettes and animals complete the primary design. Schürmann illustrated a very similar example. – The corroded brown sections have been repiled and the sides newly overcast. Original end finishes, but restored in places, one stitched tear.

This small seat cover, with a disc medallion on a yellow field and blue lotus vines in the corners pointing to the centre, radiates perfect harmony – a characteristic feature of early Chinese carpets. Judging by the style of drawing, the piece may date from the reign of Emperor Yongzheng (1723 - 1736), but the few surviving examples from that period are very finely woven, which is not the case in our seat cover. It may have been made a little later, still in the style of the previous period. – Signs of age and wear, slightly reduced at both ends.

The flat-woven closure band is also carefully executed, with great attention to detail.
