Our 2014 autumn auction

The generational change has set in motion a restructuring phase in the art market. Many collections compiled over the course of decades are now being dissolved, none more so than carpet collections. Heirs often feel no affinity with oriental carpets collected by their parents or grandparents and decide to sell them. Experienced older collectors frequently put up their treasures for auction during their lifetimes so as to have a hand in the proceedings themselves. This means that very good objects are returning to the market. Our autumn auction offers numerous examples of this trend.

Most of the fifteen Suzanis included in our A 85 sale have been consigned from the UK. The collector purchased them from leading rug dealers and is now selling them for reasons of age. – An elderly lady from northern Italy with many years of collecting experience has consigned forty-five carpets and textiles, instructing us to apply very moderate guide prices to ensure that preferably all her pieces will find new owners. We have indicated the provenance of this particular collection (Signora Gallo Collection). – Most of the Anatolian kilims are from two private collections. A Palatinate manufacturer was deeply involved in kilims for thirty years, but his children pursue other interests. A Swiss architect discovered his love of Anatolian kilims during many years of living in oriental countries. One of the greatest experts on Islamic architecture, he restored Islamic old towns on behalf of the Aga Khan Foundation and came into close contact with oriental textiles during his work. – Since the re-establishment of our company in 1987, Rippon Boswell has been able to successfully auction many rare and valuable Turkmen rugs. A particular highlight of this sale is the Eagle Group I carpet showing a stripe design which has been consigned from the USA.

The items offered at this sale also include several European pieces. The five cushion covers dating from the late Renaissance period were woven in northern German workshops run by Dutch emigrants and are truly lucky finds. The UK consignor purchased them from the famous C. John company in London a long time ago. Moreover, we are pleased to offer two modern French pictorial weavings. Woven ca. 1950 in the tapestry technique, the “Le Tarasque” Aubusson tapestry is based on a design by Jean Lurçat. The Picasso pile rug “Le Vase” was woven at Marie Cutolli’s Paris studio to an original design by Pablo Picasso in 1960.

    Three eight-pointed floral stars aligned along the central axis are surrounded by flowering twigs; in the wide main border, large diverse flowers are framed by a lively vine of lancet leaves. Three-star compositions are extremely rare in Bokhara Suzanis. – Several small holes, slight signs of age, good overall condition, backed with canvas.

    We are not aware of any comparative pieces for this extremely rare carpet. Judging by its knotting structure, type of wool and palette, this red-ground kelleh is probably a Kurdish piece from North East Anatolia. The white star-shaped central design with a greatly simplified animal-tree interior drawing is reminiscent of both Shahsavan flatweaves and Caucasian silk embroideries. It is embedded in a green shield-shaped medallion accompanied by four large boxes decorated with hooks. However, this four-and-one composition has not been placed exactly at the centre of the field as is otherwise common, but is offset towards the top. At the lower end of the field, the design of the rug begins with a row of three large palmettes – a motif known from the earliest Sauj Bulag rugs. – Signs of age and wear, low spots in the pile, several repairs and repiled sections, creases. Original finishes all around.

    This cover consists of variously coloured woollen fabrics joined in the patchwork technique; the interior drawing and design outlines are embroidered in silk yarn. Four hovering genies surround the light red ogival central medallion in the field. Circular and star-shaped blossoms are distributed around them. The main border design – a delicate double vine decorated with large star-shaped blossoms and fan-shaped palmettes – is a characteristic feature of these North Persian textiles. – Obvious signs of age and wear, damaged, many open seams.

    Large offset star-shaped blossoms form a striking repeat in the midnight blue field. Small solid crosses have been inserted between the closely spaced large blossoms. The red-ground main border contains a confidently drawn pseudo kufi vine enclosing abstract rosettes. Judging by its patinated colours and quality of drawing, this floral Shirvan was woven ca. 1850. – Slight damage to the sides and corners, good overall condition.

    In this Suzani from Pskent, yellow bands divide the red field into five large octagonal compartments, each enclosing a floral star. Box shapes mark the points of intersection in the lattice. In Uzbekistan this type is known as "paliak", meaning "moon sky". A comparable Suzani is illustrated in the "Uzbek" catalogue. – Good condition, backed with canvas.

    This long two-panel kilim was woven by an Aydinli nomad tribal group in the Konya region. The white ground of the field is woven partly in wool and partly in cotton yarn. The four large hexagons linked at their tips are decorated with huge double hooks while hooked diamonds adorn the dark brown border. In his early "Anatolian Kilims" exhibition, Frauenknecht displayed a further example of this group in 1982. – Restored in places, now in good condition.

    This two-panel white-ground kilim was woven in the surroundings of Aleppo at a time when North Syria was still a province of the Ottoman Empire. It is finely woven in clear and brilliant colours. Offset rows of closely spaced elibelinde motifs make up the striking design of the field. Sharply serrated designs are aligned in the black-brown border. – Corroded brown in places, good condition.

    A large Bokhara Suzani of the ruijo type – a ceremonial bedspread for the wedding night. The plain centre has been cut out, probably because the embroidery was destined for use as a door surround. The upper horizontal panel and lateral “arms” are decorated with large circular and fan-shaped blossoms encircled by green vines. – Good condition.

    Large Shakhrisyabz Suzanis rank among the most beautiful Uzbek embroideries. Truly old examples are characterised by their high artistic standard and the fine quality of their materials. Drawn in a spirited style, the complex and richly detailed design is full of life and movement. The composition – a central circular blossom surrounded by four diagonal fan-shaped blossoms and four further large circular blossoms placed in the corners of the field – used to be one of the traditional Shakhrisyabz design concepts. Small birds and water jugs are distributed around the central motif. A Suzani that compares well can be found in the "Uzbek" catalogue. – Signs of age and wear, the embroidery has been partially restored; various holes in the ground weave have been backed with fabric.
