When embroidering the individual narrow panels of a suzani, the various women in a family usually took pains to ensure that this communal work would present a harmonious whole once assembled, but the opposite is true in this suzani. The motifs do not seamlessly merge across the joints, and there are distinct differences between the panels in terms of their style of drawing, choice of motifs and colours. A peculiar one-off. – Signs of age and wear, partially worn embroidery, a number of large stains, several repaired areas. Backed with linen.

Meticulously worked in a chequerboard design of colourful fabric strips, this very beautiful quilt was made by Mennonites in Pennsylvania in the mid 19th century. According to information provided by the consignor, it was owned by the same family as of 1862 and probably made by female members of that family. Such quilts are early examples of a recycling process: worn clothing and other damaged textiles were cut up and reused. – Good condition, backed with a checked fabric.

In the white field, horizontal cone shapes are regularly aligned alternately to the left and right, combining into a repeat of six vertical rows. The motifs represent fish with triangular tail fins. The rug was probably produced in a fishing village on the Pomeranian coast around 1950. Coarsely woven from sheep’s wool, such rugs showing maritime motifs (fish, sea birds, beach plants, boats and anchors) had been made at home by local fishermen since the late 1920s and were still appreciated as folk art products in the days of the German Democratic Republic. At the time, they were marketed as “Freest Fishermen’s Carpets”. – Very well preserved.
