Almost always red in ground colour, they show considerable differences in ornamentation and composition. A common feature shared by all khalyks is their inverted U-shape including vertical arms and a triangular flap at the bottom edge of the horizontal panel. Tradition has it that khalyks were affixed to the opening of the veiled bridal litter during the wedding procession – a particularly prominent position that provides a clue to their symbolic value. Once the festivities were concluded, they were evidently never used again, but were cherished as textile family treasures. – The number of surviving khalyks is not large, there are maybe 70 known pieces. The example offered here from the George Bailey Collection, previously published in "Turkoman Studies" in 1980, is particularly rare in that it is white in ground colour, a feature that relates it to the Kalman khalyk sold by us in May 1996. The horizontal panel and arms are decorated with a continuous design of large curled leaves attached to an angular vine, making the khalyk appear like a miniature version of a kapunuk. The triangular flap is extraordinarily small in this item. – Good condition except for several insignificant repairs and one small hole at the top right; original sides all around and remains of the decorative fringe.
A84/127","index2":"

RIPPON BOSWELL, auction A 44, 11th May 1996, lot 59
PINNER, ROBERT & FRANSES, MICHAEL, Turkoman Studies I. Owning one of these magical trappings is every passionate Turkmen rug collector’s dream. Animal-tree asmalyks are even rarer than Tekke bird asmalyks. In “Turkoman Studies”, where this example was first published in 1980, Pinner & Franses list seven animal-tree asmalyks. Since then their number has increased to twelve known pieces (8 – the Vienna asmalyk, publ. in the second TKF book in 1886; 9 – the Collins asmalyk, sold by us in 1988; 10 – the Hecksher asmalyk, publ. in 1996; 11 – the Wiedersperg asmalyk, publ. in 1999, 12 – the asmalyk discovered by Peter Pap in the USA two years ago, as yet unpublished).

A diamond lattice of apricot lines, with cone-shaped designs at the points of intersection, constitutes the basic layout of the composition. Midnight blue, deep dark green and ivory diagonal leaves with serrated outlines are linked to the lattice. Arranged in an alternating colour scheme, they provide a lively contrast to the dark red field which is somewhat lighter in ground colour in the bottom section. Four serrated leaves at a time combine to form inner diamonds enclosing, like fences, delicate trees topped with large flowers, each flanked by two tauk nuska animals. The entire composition is of strictly symmetrical construction and executed with great precision, resulting in the topmost tree of the central row being positioned exactly beneath the apex of the stepped arch. – Unique features of the Bailey asmalyk are the white diamond framed by a diamond-shaped projection of the basic lattice immediately beneath the apex of the arch, and two halved chemche designs in the upper lateral areas. In the curled leaf border, which is an intrinsic part of this asmalyk type, the Bailey asmalyk has a tauk nuska animal inserted into the left vertical band – another feature not seen in any of the other asmalyks. The piece is of particularly fine and regular weave, with a velvety pile of first-rate wool. We must never assume that prestige objects of this kind, which required the greatest artistic and technical skill to produce, would have been available to every Tekke family; if that had been the case they would have survived in far greater numbers. The good condition of almost all the known examples is the best evidence of the high esteem in which these cult objects were held. – Very good condition, original finishes all around. The wide additional borders woven in the jijim technique and sewn onto the sides and bottom are original as well.

A84/140","index2":"

PINNER, ROBERT & FRANSES, MICHAEL, Turkoman Studies I. Neighbours of the Göklen, they inhabited the fertile and populous south west of Turkestan close to the Persian border. Only in the past twenty years has it become possible to distinguish Karadashli weavings from those of other Yomut tribes. Art historic studies and style criticism have been as important in these endeavours as scientific methods and precise structural analysis.

Certainly woven before 1800 and possibly significantly earlier, this impressive Karadashli main carpet is likely to be one of the oldest examples of its group. Presenting just eleven primary güls arranged into three vertical rows, a spaciously conceived composition and rich luminous colours, it is archaic in appearance. Comparable examples contain a larger number of güls. As the item has not yet been radio carbon dated, its actual age is still a matter of speculation. The primary gül – a simply drawn flat octagon – appears to have developed into the actual Karadashli tribal gül, and is now considered one of the identifying features of their weavings. The Karadashli may have adopted the design from the Göklen since the same gül occurs in Eagle Group bags. In terms of structure, Karadashli rugs differ from Eagle Group rugs in their knotting structure using a symmetric knot.

What makes this main carpet unique is its type of secondary gül, a cross motif with four tauk nuska animals arranged around it (see examples published by Rautenstengel-Azadi and Herrmann). The design belongs to the repertoire of Eagle Group bags and does not occur in any of the other published Karadashli main carpets. The field design thus consists of a combination of ornaments previously only seen in Eagle Group bags – yet another example of the design transfer that took place among Turkmen tribal groups. Irregularities in the execution suggest that initially the weavers may not have been accustomed to the design as it was still unfamiliar, indicating that we are dealing with one of the oldest examples in the group. In the lower horizontal border, the palmette-like forms within the wavy vine are still executed in the style of Eagle Group rugs; subsequently ashik güls were used. The first row of primary güls has a horizontal line running across the gül centres, as in Eagle Group bags. From the second row of güls onwards, the dividing line has been omitted. The secondary borders display a striking change in design, especially along the left-hand side. Seeing that the secondary border design continues uniformly along the right-hand side, but settles down much later on the left, we can assume that several women worked on the rug.

The upper right-hand corner has been repiled and is now faded in colour; several old repairs and repiled sections in the field. New overcasting along the sides, remains of the original kilim finishes survive at both ends.

A84/179","index2":"

RAUTENSTENGEL, ANNETTE & VOLKER & AZADI, SIAWOSCH, Studien zur Teppich-Kultur der Turkmen. His copies of classical carpets remained undetected even by experts for a long time, and consequently found entry into the collections of museums and famous collectors. The original copied by Tuduc in this case is the Holbein carpet in the Bruckenthal Museum of Sibiu, Transylvania (inv. no. 2182). The carpet was first published by von Vegh & Layer in 1925 and then illustrated by Schmutzler in his major compendium, "Alt-Orientalische Teppiche in Siebenbürgen" in 1933. Aside from the fact that Tuduc probably knew the original, which was still kept in the Protestant church of Sibiu at the time, he had at his disposal colour reproductions which he used as a guide. When comparing the original and the fake, it is interesting to note that Tuduc added an inner secondary border to his carpet; it does not exist in the original, which only has one main and one outer border. – The condition, with obvious signs of wear in several places and repairs of amateurish appearance, was deliberately created by Tuduc to feign great age.
A85/106","index2":"

SCHMUTZLER, EMIL, Altorientalische Teppiche in Siebenbürgen. They differ widely in terms of ornamentation. – During the wedding procession, a khalyk was attached to the small door of the veiled bridal litter and apparently not used once the ceremony was over, but preserved by the family as a textile treasure. The number of surviving khalyks is low; some 70 examples are known. The rarity and beauty of khalyks as well as their appreciation as cult objects of highly symbolic significance among the Turkmen, have made these miniature rugs coveted collector’s pieces. – Formerly in the collection of the Canadian architect Thomas Kalman, this khalyk was sold by us in May 1996 and is now being resold by the then purchaser. It is one of the rare white-ground examples. Displaying a curled leaf design and a crescent border, this khalyk appears like a miniature version of a kapunuk. Large-medallion Suzanis appear imposing on account of their expressive style, strong colours and the monumental impact of their designs. Significant differences exist as regards their composition, ornamentation, palette, dimensions and structure, leading Franses to classify them into various sub-groups. Consigned from a New York collection and belonging to category A, this Suzani was published as example A 19 in Franses’ catalogue. – Backed with canvas, very good condition.
A85/165","index2":"

HERRMANN, EBERHART, Asiatische Teppich- und Textilkunst 1.
