However, smaller examples were made in the "nim" format only half this size. They are far more rare. The monograph published by Michael Franses in 2000 lists just eight suzanis measuring less than two metres in length. – This gorgeous nim suzani, catalogued as "G2" by Franses, was first published in HALI magazine in 1978. At the time it was still owned by a Johannesburg collector. It significantly differs from other large medallion suzanis in its extremely fine embroidery, in this case a yurma chain stitch throughout. It allowed even the smallest details to be precisely rendered and to create wonderful effects in the unusually rich colours. It is a highly elegant and delicate example that creates a very different impression from the large-format suzanis with their huge medallions and explosive designs in blazing colours. – The elongated central motif with rounded corners contains a wide cross which is associated with a multitude of small, mosaic-style designs. Small water jugs (ibrik) and tiny birds have been incorporated everywhere. The golden spiral surrounding the design is a stylistic feature of the group. Four diagonal bars which disappear under the border at the sides, but converge at the top and bottom centres, combine into two gables at the ends of the field or, when viewed as a whole, into an elongated hexagon with the medallion at its centre. The wide main border displays large blossoms, alternately in top view and side view, linked by a green vine. These motifs contain further birds and water jugs. The outer guard stripe is fully embroidered in a design of small diamonds. – In the light of the deviations described above, it is unlikely that this suzani is from the city of Bokhara or its vicinity, but may have been made in the embroidery centre of Kermina further to the north east. We propose a conservative date around 1800, but feel that an even earlier date is conceivable. A comparative piece was published by Herrmann. – Slight signs of age and wear, good overall condition. It exudes an air of mystery and magic that makes it a true "cult kilim". The composition of just a few colours and designs focuses on essentials, omitting anything superfluous. We do not know the sacred message contained in this kilim, but we do sense its numinous aura. – The diverse shades of red in the right-hand panel are striking. It can be assumed that the different hues were employed deliberately to create a contrast to the other side. Apart from a few protective symbols in the brocading technique, the inner section has been left undecorated, allowing the blood-red ground colour to come into its own. The sides of the field are decorated with sharp points, creating a smooth transition to the white-ground border containing powerful, reciprocal spiral hooks. Only one other kilim with a border like this has been published to date (see below). – It is no surprise that this vibrant kilim is one of the collector Vok’s favourite items. – The provenance assumed by Hirsch is the mountainous region between Ermenek and Konya. The kilim probably once belonged to the inventory of a mosque and has survived for this reason. In Anatolia, it was traditional to donate a deceased person’s coffin cover to the local mosque after the funeral. – Signs of age and wear, original sides, damaged ends, reduced at the top. The important occasion explains the requirement for a high quality. Red and blue warps as well as red, blue and black-brown wefts were used in sections. This method results in different ground colours, creating special conditions for the composition. The designs are finely woven in the sumakh technique. The high proportion of white cotton used primarily in the contour lines creates sharp contrasts with the respective ground colours that make all the designs stand out boldly. The composition was strictly determined by tribal tradition: two very wide borders surround a small, usually red and undecorated field; the borders are divided into rectangular panels of varying sizes and design which are clearly defined by narrow white-ground borders or stripes. This shadda is considered one of the most beautiful examples of its kind. Herrmann, who published the piece in 1985, aptly writes: "Von bestechender Transparenz sind die Muster dieser Schasawan-Decke (The designs of this Shahsavan cover show a capativating transparency)." A comparison with the other examples listed below reveals that the designs are larger and less closely spaced in this item. The individual motifs stand out very clearly and are set off to good effect. The rare bracket shapes also occur in the example sold by Christie's in London in 1986. – Minimal signs of age and wear, very good overall condition.
A88/125","index2":"

SABAHI, TAHER, Kelim - Kaukasische Flachgewebe. There is no doubt that this magnificent example was produced for a wedding. It was hung in the bridal tent as a curtain (pardeh) to create a separate private area for the newly married couple. The design is executed with meticulous attention to detail in what is almost a "Realist" style. Six animal caravans, alternately comprising seven camels carrying bridal litters or seven mounted horsemen, cross the field from right to left. Each caravan is led by a guide standing before the first animal and holding its reins. The horsemen are turned deliberately to face the viewer; the birds perched on their left hands identify them as falconers. Since falconry was a privilege enjoyed by the aristocracy, it can be assumed that the shadda was a precious gift for a high-ranking dignitary. The plain brown ground is filled with a plethora of small, abstract geometric animals, loosely arranged in vertical rows and interspersed with small blossoms as well as two stepped polygons at the bottom right. A stripe from a typical Shahsavan border inserted next to these may offer a clue to the item’s provenance. – The foundations of most shaddas consist of red and blue sections. Almost all of them exclusively depict camel caravans, even in the wide borders (see references). The mounted horsemen positioned so prominently in this item are not encountered elsewhere, except for the presence of scattered horsemen in the St. Petersburg cover, which is unique in a number of ways. It has not been possible to establish whether the Vok shadda was made in the Karabagh area, as assumed by Tanavoli, or whether it comes from a different region of the southern Caucasus. Similarly, it has not been possible to attribute it to a particular tribe up to now. However, we do know that this is one of the most beautiful surviving examples. – Minor rewoven areas in the ground, very good overall condition.
A88/128","index2":"

GEWERBEMUSEUM BASEL (publ.), Alte Teppiche aus dem Orient. He had to own this wonderful piece! – The rectangular, fully embroidered medallion extending across the whole of the field contains a huge rotating pinwheel with long spokes that appear like the sails of a windmill. The focal point of the dramatic composition is a circular blossom enclosing a wheel motif and outlined in elaborate double hooks ending in spirals. The wide design panels emanate from it, powerfully diverging in all directions with explosive force. The viewer is simply overwhelmed by the stunning impact of the composition and blazing colours. A closer look reveals a surprising variety of designs in the various panels: long twigs decorated with trefoils, blossoms or mushroom-shaped designs; stepped diamonds; and, in one panel, diagonal water jugs. The outer contour of the medallion consists of apricot trefoils surrounded by outward-facing, steel-blue, mushroom-shaped double hooks resembling ibex horns. They may be power symbols pertaining to an ancient shamanic tradition. The main border design is a brown spiral surrounding the field. This section, the only one not fully embroidered, allows the white foundation to show through; the contrast thus achieved plays an important part in the composition. Meticulously planned to eliminate any arbitrariness, the design was created by a master draughtsman and flawlessly executed by the embroiderers. Suzanis displaying such consummate artistic skill and craftsmanship were certainly produced in workshops, and were not domestic embroideries. This is also indicated by the use of nineteen different colours. It is assumed that such works of art designed to meet the highest standards took two years to produce. – An elaborate symmetrical network of petrol arabesques has been arranged around the central circular blossom and its four diagonal palmettes, with eight large petrol acanthus leaves providing an outer surround. This Shakhrisyabz suzani thus belongs to a rare sub-group including only a few known examples. An almost identical example was sold by us in 2013. The two suzanis are identical in ornamentation and design layout, but the overall tonality of the Vok example is somewhat cooler. Analogous to the powerful style of the field, the very wide main border provides space for its fourteen large motifs – two types that alternate at regular intervals, densely surrounded by vines – to come into their own. In the Vok niche kilim, the Islamic date "in the year 1288" appears at the top of the steep stepped arch. The inner sides of the green-ground mihrab are decorated with red or brown hooks. A red amphora enclosing a water jug is placed on the central axis. From the amphora, a geometric, abstract flowering tree ascends towards the top of the arch. The stars seen in the red section above the mihrab follow the shape of the arch, moving the top of the mihrab upwards like soundwaves. In the wide golden yellow border, the motifs surrounded by lattice shapes – characteristic of the group – are reminiscent of candelabra. They are delicately drawn and woven in a number of colour variations. Arranged vertically and horizontally in the brown-ground outer border, the large shield forms enclosing plants are also encountered in Erzerum kilims. The very beautiful colours and spacious composition make this niche kilim one of the most impressive examples of the group. – Hirsch mentions the coastal town of Ordu on the Black Sea as the provenance. The kilim was probably used as a hanging to cover a wall niche, thus it is not a prayer rug. – Several rewoven sections, in particular along the border. The embroidery technique (kanda khayol filling stitches, yurma and ilmoq contour stitches), the glowing colours and the overall expression leave no doubt about this. The idiosyncratic, even eccentric composition and the significant irregularities seen in the design and its execution are very different from the professionalism displayed in most Shakhrisyabz pieces, which are usually planned with precision and executed to perfection; many of them are probably workshop pieces. This item is based on an individual concept, an alternative design of expressive and powerful appearance, which is unlike the prevailing local design tradition. The asymmetric composition without a central design and the flamboyant style of drawing immediately catch the eye. Four huge, sprawling primary designs occupy the whole of the field. More usually encountered as a border design and dramatically enlarged in this item, the motif consists of a central circular blossom with four diagonal arms composed of petrol leaves. The latter enclose red fan-shaped blossoms attached to long stalks. Varying numbers of smaller blossoms and leaves, each in a different design, are grouped around the central circular blossoms. Slender panicles decorated with colourful flowers and leaves have been placed in the free spaces to further enliven the composition. The distinctly different sizes of the primary motifs and their idiosyncratic design, with shapes portrayed in dynamic movement, create an impression of a garden growing wild. The wide main border of ten large circular blossoms and various smaller blossoms shown in side view, surrounded by an elongated vine, displays the same spontaneity as the field design. Only two further suzanis from fffrfromfromthis distinctive group are known. One example is now in the de Young Memorial Museum in San Francisco (inv. no. It is a work by the Azeri group which makes up the majority of the local population. Two flaming red and one dark green vertical bars with deeply incised serrated outlines have been placed on the deep blue ground of the field. They constitute a coherent rhythmic entity within the wide frame created by the blue ground of the field. Two fine red lines provide the upper and lower finishes. In his discussion of the kilim, the collector associates the design with three pillars that appear to float on the blue ground. It is amazing how superbly the weaver managed to combinevery simple yet formally outstanding means and just three bold colours to create a textile picture of this expressive power. Bold abstract compositions of this kind appear to have been a speciality of the Azeri. – Very good condition.
A88/153","index2":"

HERRMANN, EBERHART, Asiatische Teppich- und Textilkunst 3. The usual, distinct separation of the field and border section has been abandoned in favour of a dynamic design that powerfully extends across the whole of the field. At its centre, a circular blossom enclosing a star design appears to rotate. It is encircled by two of the zoomorphic forms so characteristic of all large medallion suzanis; resembling salamanders or centipedes, they are always fully embroidered. Several blossoms in diverse shapes and sizes, drawn in side view, are associated with the central motif and framed by an inconspicuous hexagonal border. Six huge blossoms surrounded by golden spirals and elongated curvilinear “salamanders“ dominate the overall picture. – Michael Franses’ monograph, "The Great Embroideries of Bukhara", constitutes an inventory of the 54 large medallion suzanis known in 2000 and undertakes a division into design groups. The Vok suzani no. 43 belongs to the rare UE group, represented by just three examples, and is catalogued as UE1. In the first Suzani publication, Taube neither assigned it to the large medallion group nor recognised its provenance in the surroundings of Bokhara, despite the fact that it meets all the relevant criteria. Why? The reason can be found in his essay, “Reflections on ‘Large-Medallion’ Suzani“ (Suzani II, pp. 75 – 80). Here, the author identifies one of the medallion suzanis (Vok suzani I, no. 48, lot 134 in this sale) as the oldest and thus most authentic example which supposedly still fully reflects a nomadic tradition. Based on a formula devised by himself, he goes on to describe the development of the designs as a continuous departure from the original tribal character and thus as a process of progressive alienation resulting in degeneration; on the other hand, he interprets it as the individual’s liberation from the constraints of tribal tradition. The Vok no. 43 suzani is not even mentioned in Taube’s essay. It probably did not conform to his line of reasoning. – Western concepts of a linear style development can only be projected onto oriental textiles up to a point. In fact, a comparison of LM suzanis shows that different design concepts co-existed equally. The substantial differences between them contradict the hypothesis that they all derive from a single original type. Rather we must assume parallel developments. Hans Belting, a well-known art critic, once stated, “der Gänsemarsch der Stile hat nicht stattgefunden (styles did not march in single file)“. Although he was referring to European art, his statement equally applies to works from oriental cultures. Different design concepts existing in parallel and mutual influences were a reality especially in Uzbek textiles, and creative freedom played a major role as well. – Several restored areas, now in very good condition.
A88/159","index2":"

VOK, IGNAZIO, Vok Collection.
